Math prize for Indian prof in NYU


After humiliating defeats against Bangladesh and SriLanka and a first round exit from the vision 2007 World Cup, Indians have something to cheer about.

Prof. Srinivasa Varadhan, an Indian born professor in NYU has won the Abel Prize, constituted by Government of Norway for distinguished work in the field of mathematics.

Prof.Srinivasa Varadhan an Indian born professor armed with doctorate from Indian Statistical Institute from Tamil Nadu left for US four decades ago.

Working with Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, since 1963, professor has received this award for “for his fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviation.”

Even after winning prize worth six million kronor (545,325 euros, 864,450 dollars) Prof. Varadhan is a humble man .
